Ahn fled North Korea when is father criticised the regime: “My father was a member of the Communist party and responsible for food rations. One day he had a few drinks too many and said the authorities were to blame for the lack of rice, it was not due the workers’ lack of skills. My father was so upset he killed himself. My mother and brother were sent to a prison camp. The authorities tried to capture me too, but I fled and was wanted in China and North Korea.
